The Milestone 60th Birthday Party
Paperia | February 2015
This week our milestone birthday series is all about sixty. Grab a shovel and gloves because you’re about to do some major digging! You’ll need to play part researcher and part party planner to achieve a one-of-a-kind sixtieth celebration. The focus is on creating a highly personalized tribute to the guest of honor that draws from his/her most cherished moments and accomplishments.
By age sixty, people have experienced a great deal of life. Some will be approaching retirement and eager to reap the rewards of years serving the workforce. Many will have grandchildren and will be enjoying the cheer and fulfillment of time spent with young, curious minds. Having journeyed through the inevitable highs and lows of life, age sixty carries with it an air of accomplishment, the wear of acquired wisdom, and the hope of enjoying more leisure time ahead. What better way to recognize their “ripe” stage of life than with a thoughtful tribute to the past?
Here are some possible themes for a 60th birthday party:
- Pay homage to the birthday guy or gal with a throwback party! Those turning 60 in 2015 would have been born in 1955, so how about a 50s theme party – complete with retro décor, food, and favors? Compile photos of the celebrant’s past from various stages of life and play a slideshow throughout the evening, or make poster boards to display throughout the venue. Be sure to invite special friends and colleagues from their different circles and networks.
- For a 60s theme party, consider an invitation with retro type face and motifs that include poodle skirts, a jukebox, classic car, or LP record. Consider a pastel color scheme with light pinks, yellows, and mint, adorned by a thick black font. Some fun wording could include: “Aged to Perfection!” or “Rockin’ to the Oldies for John’s 60th Throwback Bash!” or “Mary’s 60th Sock Hop!”
Cheers to Sixty Years!
- Another great idea to celebrate a 60th birthday is to invite close friends and relatives to share a brief story or speech about the guest of honor. Candid and heartfelt speeches are a lovely way to celebrate one’s accomplishments and highlight one’s uniqueness. This can be done with a good old- fashioned, casual pig roast, or a more sophisticated cocktail hour preceding a plated meal. The key is to invite speech-givers beforehand and to specify a time length so as to not hold up a meal or stagnate a party’s momentum.
- For a casual pig roast, consider a red-and-white checkered invitation with the words “Roast & Toast – Joe’s Turning Sixty!” This could include an image of a pig, bandannas, or spitfire. For a fancier fete, consider using wording in a script font that reads: “Cheers to Sixty Years!” accompanied by fancy cocktail glasses, wine bottles, or a hand raising a champagne glass. Another option could be a photo invite that includes a childhood or high school photo of the guest of honor, paired next to a present day shot, complete with wording: “Wendy’s Walk Down Memory Lane!”
By taking the time to contact old friends and colleagues, compile photographs, and plan kind, heartfelt speeches you will surely make this 60th birthday party a true celebration of one’s defining life experiences.
